Method one

Tell people it is hop-hop-change (pause). Then add in the idea that since the emphasis is on the first beat you can stamp with the free foot on the first hop so it becomes stamp-hop-change (pause). Explain that EFDSS convention is to stamp on the other side of the hopping foot, but anywhere else is allowed (and encouraged in a travelling rant).

Method two

"Touch your right foot on the ground to the left of your left foot, pick it up, put it down beside your left foot. Touch your left foot on the ground to the right of your right foot, pick it up, put it down beside your right foot."

Demonstrate with an enthusiastic enough "pick it up" that you hop as you do so.
