Teaching Tips - Swinging

Cambridge Folk Home Page Training page Teaching Tips

Method one

Explain that you swing with your weight on your right foot, but have to use your left foot to move. Demonstrate "step and step and step and step" stepping onto your right foot on the "step", and briefly going onto the left foot for the "and". Explain that if you cling onto a partner then you will go round in circles rather than in a straight line.

Method two

All stand in a big ring and put your arms behing your neighbour to hold hands with the next person round to form a tight ring. All put your right foot in and buzz-step round. That's a swing except you are doing it with a mob, not just a partner.

Holds

Holds don't matter. Some holds may need a warning that you should aim to be standing beside your partner, stepping forwards rather than facing your partner and side-slipping.
